EDF rates reduction

1st July 2020

A rateable value reduction for four of EDF Energy's nuclear power stations has resulted in major losses for the local authorities involved.

The reductions equate to savings of almost £35m for the company, which is predicted to have a massive impact on the income received by the affected areas. The worst of these is Hartlepool Borough Council, where the Tees Road site equates to around 20% of the total business rates collected by the authority.

In response, councils have requested a meeting with Communities secretary Greg Clark to discuss the wider potential impact of the decision.
